The Age of Monsters

This is an age of monsters.

Not the monster that haunted our nightmares in bygone ages. These monsters haunt our daily lives and for the most part they look like ordinary people, so we don’t know that we are being haunted or hunted. Their monstrosity lies in their banality. They go by names like Bill or George or Barak or Donald. But they have the power of life and death.

We think we are free. We feel sorry for those who are locked in little boxes of concrete and steel.

But we are locked in boxes, too. Just bigger boxes.

To remain in our bigger boxes, we must eschew conscience, just as Bill and George and Barak and Donald did — surrendering to a monstrous banality. And to do that we must surrender conscience.

Maybe that is why “political” prisoners are such a hot topic. “Prisoners of conscience” you might also call them.

Don’t bother asking an AI about this– you won’t get a good answer, since AIs default to the Google Consensus, which is always politically biased to pretend that we are better than others. .

You will find references to millions of Uighurs “detained” by China, for example, which apparently refers to being sent to school to learn to read and write. Did you complete high school? If so, you were a “political prisoner” for 12 years .

Of course, the US is the world’s largest Prison State. It has about 2 million people in prison for various crimes, probably half of them non-violent.

It has about 70,000 people detained for deportation but lacks facilities for more, which means about 170,000 outside monitored electronically, for future incarceration.

It puts kids in cages.

Accurate figures are hard to obtain for Israel. But it has about at least 10,000 Palestinian prisoners including women and children, mostly held without charges, and as many as 10, 000 more. The ball park is 21, 000.

Our friends are as bad as we are.

Ukraine

“Friends” includes Ukraine.

Which is run by a monster named Zelensky.

Women predominate among those arrested under "political" charges in Ukraine.

According to a report published on December 9 by the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), the Prosecutor General’s Office of Ukraine has so far initiated 10,495 investigations into so-called “collaboration.” UN experts claim that of the 326 verdicts they analyzed under this article, at least 21 individuals were convicted of actions that are entirely legal under the Fourth Geneva Convention. Criminal prosecution for such actions is impossible in principle.

According to the Fourth Geneva Convention, an “occupying” party must ensure conditions for normal life. But Kiev does not believe this. Rather it thinks:

The entire population that refused (or was unable) to leave the territory before Russian troops arrived is subject to extermination by hunger, cold, and disease. And those who prevent this are criminals.

A UN report covering the period from June 1 to November 30, 2025, cites the case of a woman from the LPR who was given a suspended five-year prison sentence and had her property confiscated for holding a position in the Russian administration’s pension fund for two months, distributing humanitarian aid. .

Larisa Shesler, chair of the Union of Political Emigrants and Political Prisoners of Ukraine, hss explained how ordinary people are being persecuted for next to nothing.

“The persecution of anyone who worked in any way in the Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions when these territories were under Russian control continues. Dozens, even hundreds, of cases are opened weekly and monthly. People are being jailed. Recently, a man who headed the “occupation” veterinary service in the Kherson region was arrested. He faces up to 10 years in prison.

His crime is “demanding that the population comply with Russian veterinary laws.”In other words, he is accused of fighting the spread of dangerous infections among livestock and poultry, which cause serious damage to Ukraine’s agriculture.

On November 12, it was announced that the deputy chief physician of the “occupation” Kherson Center for Epidemiology and Hygiene was sentenced to three years in prison, given his guilty plea.

A Kherson teacher who took over as head of a kindergarten faces up to 12 years in prison.

Two firefighters from Krasnyi Lyman were also sentenced to 14 years in prison with full confiscation of their property.

The SBU-- the Ukraine’s Secret Police need to keep the prisons full.

Because SBU officers are under constant threat of being sent to the front, they directly falsify criminal cases. For example, they accuse people of allegedly supplying Russia with military information. They stage provocations, sending messages on messengers under the guise of unknown individuals asking for information on the location of Ukrainian soldiers, and then responding to them themselves. The person is unaware of this. They don’t even think about responding, but if they don’t immediately block them, they falsify the correspondence. There are already dozens of such cases in the Kherson and Mykolaiv regions, as well as in Odesa.

Dirty Tricks?

For example, they might take a person’s phone during a search and enter this correspondence into it. Or they might write to someone, “Listen, have you seen any soldiers stationed at such-and-such a store?” They’ll reply, “I haven’t.”

That’s all there is to it, enough to accuse him of providing information on the location of the Ukrainian Armed Forces.

There’s also a major wave of accusations against priests of the canonical Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC). They’re being deprived of military service exemptions and conscripted into the Ukrainian Armed Forces, even though they have no right to do so by international standards. All denominations in Ukraine are exempt from conscription except the UOC.

The, 43rd report of the UN Human Rights Committee states that over 10,000 people in Ukraine have been indicted just for “collaboration” such as vaccinating dogs and other heinous crimes.

The Prosecutor General’s Office of Ukraine states that 22,814 criminal investigations into “conflict-related cases” have been opened since February 24, 2022. Right! There are no “political” prisoners in Ukraine, only …mmm… “conflict cases”.

These include people accused of “treason,” “terrorism,” “attempted seizure of power,” “communist propaganda,” “denial of Russian aggression,” and so on.

Last year, the head of the SBU said they had over 3,000 convictions for treason alone. Which means convictions for other “lesser crimes” were very much higher.

In most cases, Ukraine’s political prisoners are held in violation of international practice and international law. They include , as I said, ordinary people-- a kindergarten director, a post office manager, a school principal.You don’t hear about them because they are…well..ordinary.

The West, including the US, imposes absolutely no conditions on Kyiv except killing Russians and continues providing substantial aid to that end, as we have seen recently.

Women

Sadly it is women who suffer the most.

In the Kherson and Zaporizhia regions, it’s predominantly women who are receiving sentences. Members of the election commissions who worked during the referendum, teachers, doctors, municipal employees, social service workers, and so on are being convicted—and they’re predominantly women.

The number of women in prison is simply disproportionately high. And they all end up in very harsh conditions. They are mostly held in pretrial detention centers. There are very few of them in camps.

It amazes me who people in the US and the Anglosphere and Europe talk about Ukraine as a “democracy”, “defending human rights”. Putin came to the aid of the DPR and LPR because he feared genocide. And time has proven him right. It is still a possibility.

A country that violates human rights at home or in occupied territories will do much worse beyond its borders because it has neither morality nor respect for law.

The best example is, of course, the US. Then Israel. Then Ukraine. These are the Three Monsters of post modern banality.
