Whatever happened to "liberal democracy"?

In Europe, as in Canada and America and Australia it is neither "liberal" nor "democratic" – not as I was taught in high school back in the 60s. Of course things in those days were simpler – more black and white.

Now there aren’t even shades of gray – maybe shades of pastel, woke-ish, wankish rainbow colors-- as if kids were fingerpainting politics. Just a mess.

Political events are becoming ever more ludicrous.

Is violence the only answer?

Europe …going once, going twice…gone!

Europe lost Serbia and Hungary a long time ago.

More recently it lost Slovakia. Then Georgia. And now Romania-- with an election which was not an election at all --but a coup by the ruling party.

Of course, that was also the case with Moldova.

Here's how DW described the election.

The result of the annulled first round of the presidential election was a massive shock: Calin Georgescu, an extreme right-wing independent with fundamentalist Christian Orthodox, pro-Russian, esoteric views, who was largely unknown in Romania before the election, came out of nowhere to win the poll.

Georgescu condemns anything "Western" as damaging, glorifies the Romanian fascists of the interwar years and has called for Romania's withdrawal from both the EU and NATO.

Shortly before the election, Georgescu's videos suddenly spread like wildfire on TikTok, which is why he is often described as the "TikTok" candidate.

Surprise election annulment

The Constitutional Court initially declared the first round outcome as legal only to surprisingly annul it two days before the runoff was due to take place on December 8.

The article begins with a photograph of protesters-- protesting against the winner of the first round of the election before the second round was canceled to prevent him from forming a government. A protest against the guy with popular support to suggest he wasn't popular and didn't have support!

But hey this is MSM!

The Constitutional Court allowed findings from the Romanian intelligence services that Tick-Tock videos promoting Georgescu had been funded by Russia, which is the same as funded by Satan. God uses dollars. The Devil and his BRICS demons use rubles and yuan.

The Romanian intelligence services are well known their subservience to ruling cliques-- sothe article impugned their work—perhaps because the writers were aware that of what was to come next—which implies they knew they were writing bullshit when they were doing it. Maybe they just wanted to look “authentic”.

The evidence that has been made public is flimsy. Moreover, the documents give the impression that the work of the Romanian secret services is shoddy and unprofessional.

Indeed, their completely opaque working methods have been a problem for decades. Although prescribed by law, there is no real parliamentary oversight of their work, and reports on the services' activities are either provided too late or not at all.

The Romanian Directorate for Investigating Organized Crime and Terrorism is currently investigating Georgescu, among other things to determine whether he illegally funded his electoral campaign.

The European Union has also opened formal proceedings against TikTok to determine whether it influenced the election outcome.

A day earlier, a Romanian investigative site had published a report with details and solid evidence -y’know, real reporting, that contradicted what was implied in this report and elucidated the misinformation that has been stated more or less as fact in most— but not all of the legacy media — some of the media outlets hedging a bit— as we will see. It’s that “authenticity” thing.

The center-right Romanian National Liberal Party paid for a campaign on TikTok that ended up favoring far-right independent candidate Călin Georgescu, a new report from investigative outlet snoop.ro indicates.

Georgescu was catapulted from obscurity into the lead in the first round of voting in the Romanian presidential election on Nov. 24. But the country’s top constitutional court ended up canceling the vote due to a TikTok campaign that heavily promoted the pro-Russia Georgescu, potentially impacting election results, similar to influence operations run by the Kremlin in Ukraine and Moldova.

According to the snoop.ro report, the Romanian tax agency found that the Liberals had paid for a social media campaign on TikTok through influencers and by promoting a hashtag which ended up being hijacked to benefit Georgescu instead. The Liberals are a junior coalition partner in the outgoing government and their candidate, Nicolae Ciuca, placed fifth in the annulled first round.

The National Liberal Party paid an external firm, Kensington Communication, to implement the social media campaign. In a statement, Kensington Communication wrote: “If the campaign has been cloned or hijacked in favor of one candidate or another, we ask the competent bodies to verify and take the necessary legal measures.” The company also said the script they had sent out to influencers for the campaign had been altered.

A little disingenuous?

The Snoop report did NOT say that the TickTock hashtag was "hijacked" to catapult Georgescu to victory.

It was designed by Ciuca's people to promote Georgescu on the theory that few people would really vote for him but he would draw votes from Ciuca's competitors, allowing Ciuca a clear win. It clearly did not work out that way— so Ciuca had to go to Plan B – to abort the second round of voting that would have confirmed Georgescus' victory.

Thus, President Nicolae Ciuca— who came in fifth in the first vote —will form a new "coalition "government. Losers take all.

And he has nominated his incumbent premier – who came in third in the recent election --as prime minister.

Poor Elena….

It’s a coup.

There is no constitutional mechanism by which Georgescu can turn this political chicanery around.

It is therefore up to the Romanian public to do that with massive protests, if not revolution.

But they might just be up for that.
