The Russian term that literally translates into English as “contract soldier” means “regular soldier” in English. In Russia, a contract soldier is one who signs on for a number years service in the Russian army. He is not a conscript, drafted under compulsion to do military service. All present-day British soldiers, for example, are “contract soldiers”, as are all present-day US soldiers. Members of the Wagner Private Military Company are soldiers contracted to the Wagner organisation.
