In an interview with Pavlo Zarubin, a well-known journalist on Russian state television, Putin spoke about deep misunderstandings that, he says, he initially mistakenly attributed to ideological differences. But over time, he points out, it became clear that the background is not ideology, but something else - interest.
"I thought that the contradictions with the West were primarily ideological. It seemed logical at the time - Cold War inertia, different views of the world, values, the organization of society," Putin said.
"But even when the ideology disappeared, when the Soviet Union ceased to exist, the same, almost routine deviation from Russia's interests continued. And it was not because of ideas, but because of the pursuit of advantages - geopolitical, economic, strategic." Facebook.
This is a quote from Facebook and you can find similar interpretations of Putin’s recent interview with Pavel Zarubin all over the Web. By and large, they all suggest that Putin is admitting to “deep misunderstandings” — which he is not.
Ideology has never had much to do with the conflict between Western countries and Russia as Putin has made clear he thinks - many times. Underlying everything is deep-rooted Russophobia.
In any case, most of the interview is about Western hegemonism.
Don’t pay attention to “interpretations” like this, especially from the MSM.
Take a look at the interview with English subtitles. I am not sure if this is the whole interview, but it is enough to get a good idea of what Putin wants to say.
Most of the news commentaries focus on the comment about the conflict of “ideologies”, which was the way the “Cold War” was framed-- and not only “framed” but carried out. Of course, as a KGB officer, Putin understood that very well. But he makes clear that after the fall of the USSR, he knew this was no longer an ideological war.
Once the Soviet Union had ceased to exist, he had hoped, like many, that Western attitudes would change— as indeed they had in Russia. It was, if anything, a reasonable expectation, given what the West was saying and promising.
But what the West was saying was little more than propaganda, which I explain in my previous post. “Spin” . PR. Ultimately, lies.
So this interview did not really introduce anything new — rather, it presented the core issues in a rather simple, straightforward format—which was particularly appropriate given Trump’s recent flip-flop antics.
Putin had talked about these issues before specifically in his 2007 speech in Munich— which he mentions. That was a very long, very detailed speech, but I will quote a few parts to give you a taste. I suggest you read the whole thing in entirety ….here.
Just two decades ago, the world was ideologically and economically divided, and its security was ensured by the enormous strategic potential of two superpowers.
But what is a unipolar world? No matter how this term is embellished, in practice it ultimately means only one thing: it is one center of power, one center of strength, one center of decision-making.
This is a world of one master, one sovereign. And this is ultimately destructive not only for everyone within this system, but also for the sovereign himself, because it destroys him from within.
And this has nothing in common, of course, with democracy. Because democracy is, as we know, the power of the majority, taking into account the interests and opinions of the minority.
By the way, Russia, we, are constantly being taught democracy. But those who teach us, for some reason, themselves do not really want to learn.
I believe that for the modern world, a unipolar model is not only unacceptable, but also impossible. And not only because with sole leadership in the modern – precisely in the modern – world, there will not be enough military-political or economic resources. But what is even more important: the model itself is not working, since it is not based and cannot have a moral and ethical basis for modern civilization.

Today we are witnessing an almost unrestrained, hypertrophied use of force in international affairs, military force, force that plunges the world into the abyss of conflicts following one another.
As a result, there are not enough forces for a comprehensive solution to any of them. Their political solution is becoming impossible.
****
We see an increasing disregard for the fundamental principles of international law. Moreover, individual norms, and, in fact, almost the entire legal system of one state, first of all, of course, the United States, have crossed their national borders in all areas: in economics, in politics, and in the humanitarian sphere – and are being imposed on other states. Who would like that? Who would like that?
In international affairs, there is an increasingly common desire to resolve a particular issue based on so-called political expediency, based on the current political situation.
And this is, of course, extremely dangerous. And it leads to the fact that no one feels safe anymore. I want to emphasize this: no one feels safe! Because no one can hide behind international law as if it were a stone wall. Such a policy is, of course, a catalyst for the arms race.
If we look at what Trump and the US are doing we see that whatever Trump says he believes in a unipolar world. A US empire. And he, the Emperor without clothes.
Putin sees his nakedness.

Poor Russia. Always the victim. So misunderstood. Same old ruZZian victimhood.
Maybe stop attacking neighboring countries and biting off chunks; Moldova, Georgia, Ukraine and Ukraine. Russians are only abused and robbed by their own leadership and oligarchs.
I have NO idea what these comments are about above me:
From Europe: We are not going to breakaway from the Great United States even though it is dying. Europe is bought and paid for by the USA.
Russophobia.....still!
Frankly someone NEEDS to bomb the shit out of the USA/Israhell and probably UK/Europe.
