Drone kills and what they mean
Yes, this is a drone war and drones are weapons we need to understand.
First, some news.
The Russian news source “Reporter” reports.
"Mother Drones" of the Russian Armed Forces take control of the strategic supply route of the Ukrainian Armed Forces in Donbass with swarms of drones
Russian troops were able to reach the strategic T-30-05 Kramatorsk-Dobropolye highway, which supplies Ukrainian forces in the Toretsk and Pokrovsk directions, with their small attack drones, whose range recently did not exceed 14 km. Moreover, sections of the highway located 40 km from the line of combat contact were attacked. This was reported by Ukrainian near-military publics and experts, who were puzzled by what was happening and began to guess how this was possible.
The video footage that appeared online shows a damaged truck burning on the side of the road. At the same time, Ukrainians are noting that this convenient route has been increasingly exposed to attacks by the Russian Armed Forces in recent days and is becoming increasingly difficult to navigate.
Various suggestions have been made, including that the Russians are using "mother drones" or UAV carriers that release swarms of small drones. If this is not countered, the Russian Armed Forces will be able to take control of the strategic supply route of the Ukrainian Armed Forces in the Donbas and the front will collapse.
The Russian "mother drone", equipped with a signal repeater, allegedly hovers at high altitude outside the Ukrainian air defense zone and drops FPV drones. The Molniya and Tyuvik drones, which are resistant to electronic warfare, are also used, as are the slightly longer-range Tyuvik drones. Moreover, Tyuvik, a light attack wing, is a smaller version of the Geran family of long-range drones, equipped with a homing system and can overcome electronic warfare zones on autopilot without using satellite navigation systems or communication with the operator (at the final stage, it can be aimed at the target).
As you see, the Russians are projecting power at a distance and interdicting Ukrainian military movements and supply, with precision strikes. It’s relatively inexpensive, saves Russian lives, and is changing the face of the conflict.
Russia got into the drone business late behind the US, Israel and Turkey. Now, it’s a world leader having given the development of networked, unmanned aerial systems the highest priority. The ultimate goal are autonomous drones using AI.
But:
Despite the fact that a lot is said about the autonomy of drones (…) they are mostly semi-autonomous drones," Alexei Leonkov, a military analyst and editor of Arsenal of the Fatherland, a Russian military publication, told Sputnik. "In case of an error in the drone's autonomous actions, the operator can always intervene and correct it; or find the drone that is stuck somewhere, for example, or [to redirect] some ground drones that deliver correspondence. So it’s not yet possible to talk about fully autonomous drones which operate being controlled by artificial intelligence."
So, Russia’s drones are presently semi-autonomous. But Russia is also a world leader in AI.

I learned more about the newest drone tech by reading this 3 minute piece then by watching (too much my wife constantly chides) countless hours of analysts comments.
