I have been working on a special article for those people kind enough to buy me coffees. It follows on my last couple of articles in News Forensics on the Middle East – which have prompted a lot of people asking over and over: "what happens now?"
Now? I want to think there is light at the end of the tunnel.
But I suspect that it is a very long tunnel and it turns and curves. So, I’m navigating with a flashlight. And hope not to get run over by a train before I can escape.
As usual, I've been researching—reading reports from the Middle East, contacting my own sources there, and reading commentators and analysts in the West, talking to people smarter than me.
What I noticed right away was that even some of the very best analysts seem to be influenced by media tropes.
This unconscious compliance is also skewing "narratives" about Russia—such as the Bucha massacre supposedly committed by the neo-Nazis but attributed to the Russians, or the sinking of the Moskva by the Ukrainians—which also never happened— at least as described, by a Neptune missile —or the downing of the reaper drone by Russian jets dumping fuel or ramming—neither of which happened.
In the case of the Middle East, media madness makes it hard to understand what's really going on.
East is East and West is West… yeah Rudyard!
I'm a Canadian in Japan – so what do I know about that! Truth is—I've been here so long, I'm not sure that I understand the “West “much anymore! If I ever did. LOL.
I probably understand the Middle East better than Canada. I spent five years as MENA media advisor for two of the world's largest companies. I learned that conventional wisdom is a cognitive virus which you pick up without knowing but degrades your ability to think. The vaccine is called skepticism.
The dissonance this virus creates is particularly problematic when talking about Hamas and Iran.
So, I'm sorry guys—that special article will take a little longer.
However, it's on its way.
A tentative quote from the equally tentative article.
October 7 created a chain reaction event which is forever altered public perception. Israel and the US and its allies are revealed to be predatory dinosaurs with huge appetites and small brains. They will be replaced in an evolutionary process
It is now known that mammals coexisted with the dinosaurs. They ate each other. In the picture you see a small mammal about the size of a house cat attacking a much larger dinosaur. Dinosaurs were big and nasty—like the US. Mammals were smaller. faster and smarter—like Hamas, the Houthis, and Hezbollah. A small mammal would always lose against a Tyrannosaurus Rex. So, they just ran away and hid and ate the Rex's eggs.
In the end, most of the dinosaurs died out because of environmental and ecosystem changes to which they could not adapt. The Unipolar hegemony is simply not adaptable or smart enough to survive.
The dinosaurs that survived the Mesozoic Era are now called “birds”. What will the US be called?
***Many thanks to Occupy Schagen and “H” for including me in their discussions of “narrative” and “groupthink”.

I love golden retrievers.
Some years ago, when I went back to Canada for my father's funeral, I stayed at a friend's house. After the funeral I was sick for five days with severe gastroenteritis and my friend’s golden retriever stayed by my bed the whole time looking after me. Guess he thought I was a baby dinosaur. Maybe he was right.
For me, the birds that best characterize the evolution of the United States are the dodo (extinct) and the ostrich (head in the sand).
I really enjoy your writing. Your prismatic viewpoints reflective insights and animal friends often brighten my day and colour my own thoughts.
Just to say thank you!
