Well, rather than working with safer, cleaner, more efficient technologies that could have evolved over the past 47 years, the US will bring a number of old technology nuke plants on line. Stores of spent fuel rods will accumulate at a rate far greater than ever before. They will require power and water to keep them cool for 10 or 20 years before being sent for reprocessing or dry-cask burial. If power drops for whatever reason, diesel generators will be fired up to keep the cooling going… if there is diesel to be had. I guess windmills and solar cells can also be used … ha, who are we kidding.
If the spent fuel rods from numerous nuke plants can’t be kept cool, the last thing humanity will need to worry about is carbon emissions.
Here in Japan I just did a video on the Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant and their efforts to clean it up. Not easy. I also remember working years ago for the people building it, talking to an engineer over drinks and him saying, "it will be an accident waiting to happen".
