Mediazona is a Russian media outlet started by the cofounders of Pussy Riot—Maria Alyokhina and Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, after they got to prison a month or so short of completing their two year hooliganism sentencse as a result of an amnesty for their antics in a Russian church.
Years ago, some time before their antics in the Orthodox cathedral, they were interviewed via satellite by Charlie Rose on his PBS program. Generally an anti Putin tantrum. At that point I knew they were another western funded op. To his credit, Charlie seemed ill at ease with the interview. They seemed unhinged even to him.
I wonder what PR is thinking, to have held the line for so long and now to sell out. Perhaps it's just a lot LESS work to take the numbers from Ukraine and to hell with the research.
It was never much work involved in their calculations. They may use to just take the Ministry of Defense's numbers and add 20 to 25% of them! This allowed them to complain that the Ministry of Defense was not being honest-- and the public reaction was naturally… Well… Maybe… But that was the Russian public. Russian public however is not really interested in these people-- who are rich Russians living abroad supported by Russia's enemies. But the organization status as a RUSSIAN media organization is attractive to the western propaganda machine-- and wins funding. Hence numerous articles quoting them in the Economist,, the Guardian and so on. Instead of taking Russian Ministry of Defense numbers-- they take the laughable numbers and reduce them somewhat.
My understanding - via Mercouris and The Duran - is that Mediazona took open source death notices and funeral announcements from Russian media. NOT MOD numbers. That sounds like a fair amount of work, but likely could be systematized. Pretty hard to game too. And it preserved some sort of audit trail.
