A tremendous article, a fascinating history which, more importantly, helps explain the mess we're in. Thanks.

I realized from comments on my last article, I needed a bit more history. I just added links to the article to reference SOME of the sources that I used. There are many. And they often contradict each other, which is a problem. Ultimately, I lot comes down to human nature, which is difficult to understand in the artificial environments to which we must adapt.

Great article! Very good summary of Ukrainian history in just a few lines.

Just a couple of notes:

- In the first paragraph of "Ethnogenesis in the New New Russia (Novorossiya)", did you mean "large parts of Ukraine EAST [not West?] of the Dniepr were not all uniformly pro-Russian in 2014 except for Crimea"?

- The end of the second paragraph of the same chapter does not sound right: "The culture of Donbas and Lugansk must die so there’s could be born."

Thanks, I will fix those. I did mean "EAST" not "West". And I probably meant "their's" meaning the evolved culture of Galician Ukraine.

> For me, history is important. But events in the distant past are of less importance to what is happening today than those most recently.

This is correctly defined as a *bias*, and one that Poles will completely reject. Since you are talking about predicting what the "nation" will do, I cannot understand why you afford yourself this bias, or expect anyone reading to go along with it. I live in Lithuania. I'm not Lithuanian, but if I were to print out this article or the one prior with your definition of "Poland" I know that the instinctive reaction of every single Lithuanian would be throw it in the bin. Poles would have a much stronger reaction.

Since one of the key things of value in commentary like yours is in the proper, correct, respectful acknowledgement and accomodation of Russian attitudes, history, and viewpoints in to our worldview so that we can see things clearly, how on earth can you justify not applying *exactly the same standard* to Poles?

And while I am at it, something else that is pissing me off: you are *not* in your seventies. If you are, that's not your photo. Or, if it is, you have either retouched it to absolute hell or you have had extreme amounts of plastic surgery or you are on a permanent adrenechrome drip. So cut the shit

Now, this may be deliberate obfuscation of your identity for opsec reasons, and I think that's valid, but your continual mentioning of it is pissing me off.

Ah, Rudey my friend. Rude said, rude seen. LOL...

Sorry to tell you, the photo is not retouched. It is just a smartphone photo with good lighting, which I have elsewhere mentioned doesn't show my wrinkles-- which I indeed have.

That said, I have always looked much younger than I am. There are just some people like that. Genetics, diet, exercise -- all help. Some of commenters are the same.

If you are interested in WHY-- which I am sure you are not!-- you can to go to my website www.ageingyoung.com where I explore these issues. Ageing between individuals varies by as much as 50%--as it does in other animal species.

You can find my book on Amazon.

The relevance of recent events as compared to past history is not a bias-- it is a simple fact. And anyone who believes different;u is going to be sorely disappointed in life. Another things is that most nationalities don't know the facts of their history. That is certainly the true of Canada from where I come and also Japan where I now live.

Of course, but that was not at all my point, was it? My point is that this is not the way Poles will feel, so how can you assert a perspective which completely disregards this and also be able to get in to their heads? Maybe you really do have aspergers if you can't grasp that at a base level.

Best of luck with all the other stuff. I use my eyes, and I tend to believe them as I'm about 2/3rds your supposed age, and with everything they have taken in that you sound like you identify as a unicorn. Good for you, though, whatever works.

Ukrainians don't seem to know their own history. But their narrative and perspective on their history and their accompanying sense of self is essential to understanding this conflict. I would say that greatly influences what the possible moves are on the board. The same goes for the Poles, Lithuanians.

“Hitler tried— and partially succeeded— to create a new Germany - with a new origin story, myths of Aryan supremacy, a lot of symbols and banners - and the like. Not to mention, national enemies — the Jews and the Russians. Hate and fear are great motivators.”

If I may, just another point of order, or rather supplement to your otherwise tremendous, genuine scholarship. This is not your best paragraph

Adolf Hitler: Speech before the Reichstag - Berlin, October 6, 1939

“In long periods of history, it has been proven that the peoples of these two greatest states within Europe were the happiest when they lived in friendship with one another. The Great War in which Germany and Russia once struggled against one another has become the misfortune of both countries. It is understandable when the capitalist states of the West today have a vested interest in pitting these two states and their principles against each other, if possible. To this end, they would be willing to regard Soviet Russia as sufficiently presentable, of course, to enter into advantageous military alliances with it. And yet they regard it as perfidious if their most honorable advances are rejected, and if instead those two powers, which have all the more cause to be interested in peaceful cooperation, approach one another to expand their economic relations and thereby to pursue the happiness of their peoples.”

There is so much more to be added such as

Adolf Hitler – speech to the German Reichstag - September 1, 1939

“You know that two different doctrines govern Russia and Germany. There remained but one question to be resolved: as Germany has no intent of exporting its doctrine, and at the moment that Soviet Russia no longer contemplates exporting its doctrine to Germany, I no longer see any compelling reason why we should continue to take opposing stances. Both of us are aware that any struggle between our two peoples would merely benefit third parties. Hence we have determined to enter into a pact which shall preclude the application of force between us for all time. It also obliges us to seek mutual consultation in certain European questions. Moreover, it shall render possible economic cooperation and, above all, ensure that the strength of the two great states is not squandered in rivalry with each other.”

And

Adolf Hitler – speech in Danzig September 19, 1939

“Accordingly they should be happy to learn of the limited nature of Germany’s ambitions. I believe I am robbing them [the […] capitalist banksters based in London] of yet another rationale for going to war when I proclaim this-as they declare they must fight the present regime because it pursues “unlimited war aims.” Well, my dear gentlemen of the Great Britannic World Empire, Germany’s objectives are very limited in fact. We have discussed this in great detail with Russia, as the Russians are our next-door neighbors and, in the end, those most immediately affected. Accordingly, England ought to welcome the understanding arrived at by Germany and Soviet Russia. For the arrival at this understanding should remove once and for all the haunting images of the present German regime being out to conquer the world, an image which robbed the British statesmen of their sleep so many nights. It ought to be reassuring to know that it is not true that Germany wishes to conquer the Ukraine, or wished to do so in the past.”

[One must always keep in mind that that Russia was under the occupation of the […] Bolshevists … Hitler NEVER considered Russians (or English) as anything other than neighbours and great peoples]

[I do not resonate with that particular hyperlink source – there is no association between the occultist/theosophist/new ager Blavatsky and Hitler (or more particularly, Himmler) – they are polar opposites. in fact the likes of the demonic Aleister Crowley were driven out of Nationalist Socialist Germany – as were the Freemasons and perverse sexual deviants such as Magnus Hirschfeld and “Marlene” Dietrich. This is too big a topic to take up here – one point at a time}

Hello Julian, I too missed the notification for this post and am now working my through it, with appreciation.

(I was going to say that your suggestion in the previous article that Poland was a ‘new manufactured state’ probably more applied to Czechoslovakia – but we can come back to that later. I believe your other reader is correct)

You stated very astutely:

“But in medieval and pre-medieval times, it was inhabited by many tribal peoples, first German tribes fleeing the Huns; then by the West Slavs from the East. “

[as an aside, Hitler on at least two occasions in his many public speeches referred to the historical threat to Europe of the Huns (and rightly saw the same threat from the Bolsheviks) - yet atrocity hate propaganda often refers to Hitler as a ‘Hun’ !!]
