We didn't have "asylums" until the industrial revolution......LOL. "Foucault positions moral treatment and the asylum as both oppressive and repressive. He insisted, as he did with the penitentiary in Discipline and Punish (1977) that the creation of the asylum represented not an act of generous humanity but an effort to impose a damagingly rationalized system of order on the insane. Before the birth of the asylum, he argues, the mad were in fact better off. They were visible, and, unconfined by their surroundings. Their voices could be heard and could be said to be in dialogue with the voices of reason. The asylum was designed, Foucault believed, solely to induce conformity. Far from liberating the insane from the fetters of the past, to Foucault the asylum signaled the birth of an even more powerful ‘moral imprisonment’ of the lunatic. The driving force behind asylum construction was the desire to prevent dialogues between reason and unreason." http://www7.bbk.ac.uk/deviance/madness/intro.htm
The Masters i met in my life all pointed out, that:
1. You cannot express REALITY in words.
2. There is no "Universe" (or "World"). That is an illusion. Maya ( माया ).
3. There is no one running your life. That is a virtual mirage claiming it is doing that, while it all just happens, effortless and spontaneous in the only one moment that is real...
Being ActuallyAutistic, 1. was very clear to me from the beginning.
Following Quantum-Physics and Quantum-Field theory, after the discovery of the Higgs field, 2. was clear to me too. The Big Bang is a projection (4D) caused by "Consciousness" from a "Hologram" of Quantum-fields, which is the one, only reality, some might call it Brahman, Ain Soph, or "God".
3. Became obvious to me after i did introspection while i was in Hyperfocus (also known as "Flow") and named by Scientist: "Transient Hypofrontality" (in Bicycle-flooded Holland kids would scream: "look mom: without hands" when they found out they could steer without using their bicycle handlebars).
And yes, the attempt at trying to use Language to communicate "TRUTH", is like trying to write down the exact value of π...
Autistics like you and me live IN "reality". Allistics are at a remove, with words as buffers, mediating interaction. For us "Transient Hypofrontality" is not transient.
Thanks for trying to buy me a coffee. Send me an email address and I will send you the special article anyway, Every now and again, it seems there are glitches with credit card things – and that applies to Stripe also. I know that buymeacoffee is working because I got some coffees a few minutes ago. No matter. As I said just send me an email address. Coffee or not, it is the thought that counts!
Shortly after 7 October 2023 Seymour Hersh wrote an article whose source was an IDF officer that predicted the demise of the Hamas force within the next two weeks. His reports on things Gaza, Israel and Iran have not improved in the meantime.
What does confuse me about Hersh is the timeline of Israel's history. I am 71, Israel as a state was a done deal before my birth. As a child I was basked in propaganda about the righteousness of Israel and the valor of the IDF. Hersh is 87. I am surprised that he did not develop a skepticism of Israeli propaganda a long time ago.
Hersh was very much an establishment journalist, starting with his work for AP. Then other major media. He created a niche for himself with the Mai Lai story-- although Mai Lai was hardly a unique event! In general, his heart is in the right place. As for the righteousness of Israel-- I basked in that too at one time! Hersh had done good work. But no one gets it right all the time.
So much to read, so little time. We seem to be on the same page, I have abandoned him. Perhaps he's being bamboozled? When it comes to: " the righteousness of Israel", I grew up with that, too. Our American friends offer us money, arms, and advice. We take the money, we take the arms, and we decline the advice.
The amount of mindless celebratory 5-star reviews for the Google Critter's book are deeply disappointing (who doesn't love it when an economist points out the obvious and believes he is somehow insightful). Good reminder for people who use online reviews to make purchasing decisions: Ignore the 5-star reviews, pay more attention to the 4-star and 2-star ones... Less likely to be fake and more likely to articulate what they actually think.
What has worked for me has been the Blogs and Substacks I read referring a book or author. But I do have to keep H.. L.'s admonition in mind: The average man does not get pleasure out of an idea because he thinks it is true; he thinks it is true because he gets pleasure out of it.
That is really good advice I think. I have only recently started doing that. I was not impressed by the book. Of course I am equally unimpressed by Pinker's books. All these people belong in the same sty.
Nice history.
Agree with Foucault about conformity.
One of my fav movies was King of Hearts starring Alan Bates .
Asylums do protect society from the criminally violently insane however and it is this meaning I expressed.
Who is to protect us , certainly not the military!
A question going unanswered at the Universities of Delusions with their oppression of students protesting Genocide.
King of Hearts is a pleasure to watch.
For me the genius of Robert Allen Zimmerman is that he always leaves a back door out if what he has said.
Some observations withstand the test of time: People never lie so much as after a hunt, during a war or before an election.
Otto von Bismarck
Thank you for this! Great quote.
I have a friend who I leave out the truth about the world he doesn’t see.
Harmony as is humour is a virtue.
Those who fool those seeking social harmony with lies of violence used to be locked into an asylum.
A worthwhile goal for the fate of our present leaders to protect our social harmony from mayhem.
