“Every act of conscious learning requires the willingness to suffer an injury to one's self-esteem. That is why young children, before they are aware of their own self-importance, learn so easily; and why older persons, especially if vain or important, cannot learn at all.”
Thomas Szasz, author, professor of psychiatry (1920-2012)
This is precisely why the 'cabal / empire / deep state' whatever you want to call them , wants kids to be in public schools to be brainwashed with their globalist, woke, extreme-left socialist agenda : once they learn that guns, healthy lifestyle, patriotism and family-life et cetera is bad, it is very hard to unlearn these imprinted falsehoods at later age...
Julian, am I reading you right? You mentioned at the end that you're 76 and your eyes are getting bad. Are you really 76? If so, your profile photo is the of younger days.
The photo was 2022. Just the camera lighting doesn't show all my wrinkles and the bags under my eyes. My website is www.ageingyoung.com. My book is called Ageing Young: You're Never Too Old to Rock 'N Roll. You can find it on Amazon as an free download for Kindle members.
So you're really 76? In your photo you look late 30's! I'm 69 and people think I'm in my 50's. My age is consistently underestimated 10 years. Even though I haven't read your book, I bet I already know some of the secrets of aging young. Two big ones are a healthy diet and active lifestyle. Adequate rest is also a big one.
And here I thought I was the oldest person with bad vision on Substack! Nah, you're young at heart, Julian, and your heart is telling you to share the truth with others. Nothing better to keep you young and involved with your fellow human beings than keeping folks informed. Keep up the good work!
One of my maxims is that every instance of US narrative journalism needs rewriting. No one with a functioning intellect of any persuasion is unqualified. And you can't get it more wrong than the original writer or the editing department, whichever was on duty. At minimum you have a narrative that makes sense. Even if it's still wrong.
Writing your own stories from timelines you collect yourself is practically the only way to create a workable big narrative. And journalism as an industry has all but forgotten how to write a genuine big story anymore. Every opportunity is always used to stuff even more narrative sculpting into the old collection.
Like lots of older people I have cataracts but not serious enough yet to require correction. Fortunately, I have done a lot of videos in the area of ophthalmology so know lots of eye surgeons.
In my short reply to your fine 'rap' sheet on Biden I mentioned that for me Trump's cabinet was a shit show. Should have mentioned that Biden's cabinet is limboing under that very low bar with the FCC chairwoman, Lisa Kahn being an exception. I am awaiting her firing!
The sad fact is the best President I could have supported in terms of fulfilling a few progressive ideals, Richard Nixon did not get my nineteen year old vote. I thought at the time he was an unrepressed right winger. The Democratic Party abandoning McGovern set the template for my lifetime: never let a leftist get nominated.
The Presidents of my lifetime include a two term rogue's gallery of Reagan, Clinton, G. W. Bush, Obama and then the thankfully shorter reigns of G. H. W. Bush and Trump. Getting Biden was the frosting on a moldy cake. I am reduced to hoping that Mexico invades and we get AMLO.
Trump's "cabinet" REALLY was a shit show! Of course, in Canada we have Justin. Knew his Mom, who grew up in the same neighbourhood. Didn't care for her. Don't care for him.

Thank you Julius. This is such a great quote.

Best regards.
Exactly . Diet and activity. And rest. Mind you, my mother said it was my bad character. Hmmmm. .probably right.

Keeping my mind alive helps me stay alive I think. As does the engagement with all the nice people I meet here.

About your eyes......are you dealing with cataracts? If so, that is correctable via outpatient surgery.....had mine 15 years ago.
Now if I could only improve my hearing......my hearing aids require a full time sound man to adjust for the different voices and environments.
Like lots of older people I have cataracts but not serious enough yet to require correction. Fortunately, I have done a lot of videos in the area of ophthalmology so know lots of eye surgeons.

Take care Julian ...
